James Arthur VanHoose, 75, retired US Air Force Master Sergeant, former owner and operator of VanHoose Steak House, husband of Brenda Pridemore VanHoose, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at Bourbon Community Hospital. He was born December 28, 1931 in Thealka, KY, son of the late James Arthur VanHoose, Sr. and Dixie Mae McKenzie VanHoose Castle and a graduate of Johnson County schools. Jim was the founder of the Meteer School and organized the annual VanHoose Golf Tournament to benefit the school. The Meteer School is the first state licensed pre-school for developmentally handicapped children. It was founded in the late 1960's and was licensed by the state in 1976. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1979 and was a Kentucky Colonel. He is also survived by son, Tracy (Marsha) Hunley, Cynthiana; four grandchildren, Christina Lee Hunley, Desare, Katie, Destiny; a sister, Emma Mullins (Jo Russell), Ashland; a brother, Billy Joe (Mary) VanHoose, Waverly, OH; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Howard "Bo" and Mildred Pridemore, Paris; a brother-in-law, Rich (Debbie) Pridemore, Lexington; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. VanHoose was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Bruce VanHoose. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 13, at the Paris Cemetery Chapel by Rev. Sylvester Sanders. Casket bearers will be Tracy Hunley, John Bates, Mike Kendall, Mark Matthews, Steve Rankin, Mike Jordan, Chris Robinson, and Mark Perry. Honorary bearers will be Jim Gullet, Betty and Garland "Junior" Jordan, Sandy and Randy Yazell, Francis Honaker, Jane Mingua, Ricky Mingua, Jimmy Jones, Guy Ormsby, Randy Weaver, Linton and Delores Griffith, Arnold and Louise Keith, Jennifer Bates, and Donnie Perraut. Visitation will be after 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Antioch Christian Church, 5362 Paris Pike, Lexington, KY 40511 or the Paris Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
