Memories with Gene

Gene was such a funny guy, always playing practicle jokes. He was one of my Dad's best friends who was also a practical joker. They were always trying to best each other. I worked for Gene for many years and my story was on a job site. We were building homes in Dodge City on Manor drive and it was during the school year so I would come to work directly from school. Gene had the crew sheet rock a home leaving a closet for me to nail in. Our forman Dale Kendall cut the sheet rock for me to nail in when I got there. Gene made a trap door out of the closet ceiling and poured 10 pounds of flower on top of it. You guessed it, when I went to nail in the closet, he pulled the pin holding the ceiling trap door and all 10 pounds of flower went right in my face. The entire crew, including me, laughed until we cried. He taught us that work and fun could coexist.

Another story; we were building homes in Ulysses KS and he had me get something out of the back of his pickup truck. While I was in the bed of his truck, he took off driving down the highway 100 miles per hour and didn't stop until we got to Dodge, which was over 2 hours away. I loved Gene and have so many great memories. We will miss him.
