Hinton-Turner Funeral Home

General Price List

What it is.
In 1984, the Federal Trade Commission put into place The Funeral Rule which was intended to set standards within the funeral business to protect the consumer.   One document that was established by the rule was the General Price List or GPL as it is known. Every funeral home is to have one and are to present it to everyone they have a discussion with on price. The GPL is for your retention so that you have it as a reference.
The FTC requires that the General Price List contain specific prices so that the consumer can compare between funeral homes the line items that make up the price of a funeral.  Click here to download a copy of our General Price List.

What the General Price List includes and our price for these itemized services.
  • Basic Services of the Funeral Director and Staff and Overhead           $2,375
This charge covers a wide variety of expenses that it takes to operate a funeral business. These expenses are common to every type of service that we offer as it covers the overhead cost of doing business. A good portion of the Basic Services fee goes to the compliance of various regulatory agency laws and rules.
At Hinton-Turner Funeral Home we have many years of experience as licensed funeral directors and through this experience we can provide sound advice and dignified service to our client families.
  • Embalming            $580
First off, except in certain cases, embalming is not required by law. However, whenever the funeral arrangements you choose include a public viewing of the remains, we do require that embalming be performed.
If you do not want embalming, you have the right to choose an arrangement that does not require embalming such as prompt disposition by cremation or burial. Anytime that disposition will be delayed embalming or offsite refrigeration will be required.
At Hinton-Turner Funeral Home practically all embalming is performed by a staff embalmer with more than 30 years’ experience.  Should the death occur too far from our service area we would engage another licensed embalmer to embalm on our behalf.

  • Other Preparation of the Remains           $185
While it may appear that it would make sense to include this in the charge for embalming, the FTC mandates it be a separate charge. After the embalming is completed, time is spent in applying cosmetics and other restorative work to make the remains have a lifelike appearance. We take great care in dressing and placing the body in the casket to present a pleasing memory.
A hairdresser or barber of your choice can be utilized. They are compensated at their prevailing rate which is added to our charges. This is typically in the $35 range.
Other Preparation of the Remains may also apply if embalming is not performed but a private viewing is requested before disposition. A small gathering of immediate family members may wish to have a few minutes before cremation or burial which we can facilitate.
  • Transfer of the Remains to the Funeral Home           $280
This charge is for a licensed funeral director and assistant, when required, vehicle and equipment necessary for the removal of the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home, regardless of the time of day. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to respond to a family’s need. This price includes a death in Bourbon County. Should the death occur outside this area, a fee of $1.50 per mile one way will added.
Automotive Equipment
  • Hearse           $375
A hearse is a specialized vehicle limited in use to transporting the casketed remains to the place of disposition.
  • Limousine, (each)     $155
For those wishing to travel together to the cemetery, we offer seven passenger limousines. The limo can be used for the convenience of pallbearers and/or family members.
  • Other automotive equipment            $90
In practically every case, we make several trips in another vehicle for various reasons. In the case of church services, we transport equipment to the church. There are times that we will deliver flowers to the cemetery or the home following a service. In other cases we may have to travel for other reasons. All these uses are covered under the itemization of Other Automotive Equipment.
  • Use of Facilities, Staff and Equipment for Viewing           $350
The price for a public viewing is the same whether it is held at the funeral home or at a church. While visitation at a church does not utilize the funeral home, it is more labor intensive and requires equipment that must be transported and setup.
  • Use of Facilities, Staff and Equipment for the Funeral Ceremony           $350
This price is the same whether it is at the funeral home or other facility such as a church. While services at a church do not utilize the funeral home, they are more labor intensive and take more equipment that must be transported and setup.
  • Use of Facilities, Staff and Equipment for a Same Day Service preceded by a 2 hour public visitation           $700
This option does include a private family time one-hour prior the public visitation time.
  • Use of Staff and Equipment for a Graveside Service               $275
This option is for services at the grave only with a brief gathering at the funeral home prior to processing to the grave.

The Federal Trade Commission requires that four other Minimal Service offerings be itemized:
  • Forwarding of Remains          $2,340
Our charge includes: Basic services of funeral director and staff; transfer of remains to funeral home; embalming or other preparations of remains, if relevant; and, local transportation. • Receiving of Remains from Another Funeral Home           $1,880
Generally, this would refer to the receiving of casketed remains which are being sent here for burial from another funeral home that had visitation or ceremony at their location.
Our charge includes: Basic services of funeral director and staff; care of remains; transportation of remains to funeral home and to cemetery or crematory. This charge does not include visitation, rites, ceremonies or additional mileage charges.
Mileage for transport from an airport would be charged on a per mile fee beyond our local service area.

The FTC requires the listing of two specific forms of direct disposition: 1) Direct Cremation and 2) Immediate Burial.
  • Direct Cremation
Our charge for a direct cremation includes: Basic services of funeral director and staff; removal of remains within 25 miles; transportation to crematory; necessary authorizations. This charge does not include the use of facilities and staff for any visitation or ceremony, public or private, prior to the cremation. Also, this charge does not include the crematory charges.
If you want to arrange a direct cremation, you can use an alternative container. Alternative containers encase the body and can be made of materials like fiberboard or composition materials (with or without outside covering). Your options are:
  1. Direct cremation with an approved container provided by the purchaser           $2,530
  2. Direct cremation with a fiberboard or composition material container that we provide           $2,615

  • Direct cremations do not include any type of visitation or service (private of public).
  • Additional charges would apply should you wish to have a brief time of private viewing prior to cremation.
  • A public time of visitation with or without a memorial service following a direct cremation is available at the rate listed elsewhere in the General Price List.
  • Immediate burial
Our charge for an immediate burial (without ceremony) includes: Basic services of funeral director and staff; removal of remains; and local transportation to cemetery.
  1. Immediate Burial with container provided by the purchaser           $2,530
  2. Immediate Burial with a cloth covered casket           $3,560
  3. Immediate Burial with a casket purchased from Casket Price List              $3560 to $9,905
Funeral Merchandise
The FTC also says that a range of prices be given for funeral merchandise that would be available at the funeral home. This means that the funeral home will have a Casket Price List and an Outer Burial Container Price List that is to be presented to you prior to you being shown caskets or outer burial containers. The funeral merchandise we typically have in stock is displayed elsewhere on our website.
  • Our range for Casket Prices is $1,030 - $7,375
  • The range for Outer Burial Containers is $1,350 - $6,275
Outer Burial Containers are what casketed remains are placed it to prevent the crushing of the casket by the weight of the soil and equipment that will be driven over the grave. Not all cemeteries require an outer burial container. Burial vaults are Outer Burial Containers that are designed to be protective in that they seal in some manner.
