Obituary for Charlotte Ann Rhodes (Scott)

Charlotte Ann Scott Rhodes, 84, wife of Ernest Cornell Rhodes, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was born in Paris, Kentucky on October 24, 1932 to Samuel T. Scott Sr. and Christine Fuller Scott. Both parents preceded her in death. She had one brother, Samuel T. Scott Jr., who also preceded her in death.
Charlotte was an avid lover of music and art, and grew up wanting to be an artist. However, her mother's desire was for her to study music and piano. She studied piano as a child, and upon graduation from the Kentucky School System she left Kentucky to pursue her Bachelor of Science degree in Music at Tennessee State University. She furthered her education by receiving her Masters of Science degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. She later returned to Kentucky to teach and direct the high school choir. She was offered a position at Tennessee State University when the President of the University heard her high school choir perform. She served as Professor of Music at Tennessee State University from 1961 until her retirement in 2001. During that time she taught music appreciation and piano, and also served as the University Choir Director and Director of the Special Chorus, The Eddie T. Goins Meistersingers.

Charlotte had numerous accomplishments as a musician, educator and leader. In June 2017 a concert was performed by the TSU Alumni Chapter of the Eddie T. Goins Meistersinger to honor her and other former directors, and to establish a scholarship in their names to support TSU music scholars. This is representative of her, as she was a very giving person who never hesitated to share knowledge, or anything she had. She took pride in everything she did, and would not accept anything less from her students, family, or anyone she came in contact with. She had several church homes over the years where she served as pianist and director. Some include First Baptist Capitol Hill and Clark Memorial United Methodist Church in Nashville, and Key Memorial United Methodist a Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She was a dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta and Links, Inc.

Charlotte was joined in holy matrimony in 1968 to Dr. Ernest C. Rhodes, and they remained faithful and loving partners until her death.

Along with her husband, she leaves to mourn her passing, nephew, Louis T. Scott; nieces, Vemona Scott and Eltina Barrett of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Celestine (James) Jones of Nashville, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Mary Mae Wheeler Scott of St. Petersburg, Florida and Delois (Clyde) Wright of Westerville, Ohio; brothers-in- law, William Ray Rhodes of Columbus, Ohio and Jesse (Lucille) Rhodes of Bolivar, Tennessee; and a host of other family, many loving students and friends.
Graveside services were held Friday, September 15, in Evergreen Memory Gardens by Rev. John Reese.
