On December 5, 1943, he became a Flight Officer after attending schools at Maxwell Field, Alabama, Carlstrom Field, Florida, and Bainbridge, Georgia. He was deployed to the European Theater and saw action in the Middle East and Africa. While in England, he was in the 2nd Bombardment Division commanded by General William E. Kepner. He flew on 31 combat missions including some of the deepest penetration made by the Eighth Air Force heavies on targets in Germany and enemy occupied Europe. He attacked the French invasion coast on D-Day twice when Liberators were out to support the ground forces making landings. While in the Middle East and Africa, he won the War Department Citation for his part in the low level bombing attack on the Ploesti oil fields. He also holds the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. He returned to Paris, KY to the family farm after the war and married Ruby Louise Johnson. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Eleanor Isgrig, Isabel Irwin Isgrig, both of Paris, Kentucky, Naomi Isgrig Brill of Lincoln, Nebraska; one brother, Daniel Isgrig of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and one great nephew, Andrew Joseph Brill. He is survived by his wife, Ruby; one daughter, Wilma Isgrig Hammons, her husband Thomas Andrew Hammons; one granddaughter, Katherine \"Katie\" Isgrig Hammons of Jackson, Wyoming; two nephews, Roger Quentin Brill of Cynthiana, Kentucky, Dr. Peter William (Bianca) Brill of North Bend, Oregon; two nieces, Cynthia Brill of Cortland, Nebraska, Donna Isgrig (Bob Kosh) of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and one great nephew, Roger Quentin Brill II. He was a quiet man of great strength with a deep respect for all living things. In his later years he took great pleasure in raising a garden and sharing the results of his efforts. He could repair anything and was always willing to lend a hand to others. He was a loving husband and father and will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved him. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Paris Cemetery Chapel by Hospice Chaplain Peter Stephens.
