A Collage of Memories

One of my earliest memories of Phyllis was the time she made a little teddy bear for my baby doll, Christy.  I was probably 4 or  5 years old and we were living on the Grant farm.  I remember being in her room, standing beside her while she sat in front of her make up table when she gave it to me.

Several years ago, we were talking about memories of her wedding.  I told her how I loved the roller skates she and Buddy had given to Jan and me for being in their wedding.  This part  I didn't remember.  She told me that she wasn't planning to give us our gifts until after the wedding, as a bribe to make sure we walked down the aisle.  They were giving the bridesmaids and groomsmen their gifts the night of the rehearsal.  She told me that I marched right up to her said, 'Phyllis,  I just don't think it's fair that we have to wait for our gifts."  She said that she was so impressed with my boldness and maturity in stating my case, that she went ahead and gave us our gifts.  I do remember how much fun Jan and I had skating around the house that night!

I remember watching her wash her hair in the sink when she lived in the apartment in Paris.  She kept rinsing and rinsing.  She said you have to keep rinsing your hair until you don't see any more suds.

While she lived in that apartment, she took Jan and me to some kind of show in the big round auditorium at the Paris school.  We ate chocolate pudding she had made afterwards.

I remember her tye dying a set of her sheets in her claw foot bathtub.

In the early years of living in Columbia, John and I had car trouble and it didn't look like we would get to go to Mom's for Christmas.  Friends of ours, Chris and Donna graciously drove us all the way to Paris and got to experience a Copher Christmas which was always full of food, fun and laughter.  Phyllis made sure, even with that last minute notice, that our friends would have  a gift to open.

One day I came for a visit to Phyllis and Buddy's house where I found Phyllis sitting on the patio reading the Bible Mom had given her years earlier.

A few months after Mom died, Phyllis and I went to the cemetary together.  She was showing me the location of our oldest, baby sister, Marvanna.  We shared our salvation stories.  She told me that as a teen, she knew she needed Jesus as her savior so she went to the alter and prayed.  We had a great talk that day about  our kids and her grandchildren.  We reassured each other that they had accepted Jesus as their savior and that we would all be together again one day in heaven with those who had passed on.  We agreed  that as mama's, that was our most important mission while on earth.

I know Phyllis is safe in the loving arms of Jesus along with our loved ones who accepted Him as Lord and Savior of their lives.  I look forward to the day that I will see them all again.  In the mean time,  Phyllis,  I love and miss you so much.

Love,

Jill
