Obituary for William Robert "Bill" Birdwell

William Robert "Bill"  Birdwell
William Robert Birdwell, age 88, of Paris, KY passed away on Friday, August 17 in Lexington, KY. He was born November 15, 1929 in Evansville, IN to the late Robert Lee Birdwell and the late Rica Hicks Birdwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Birdwell; and brother, Jimmy Joe Birdwell.

He survived by his wife of 44 years, Winetta (Wendy); two daughters, Debbie Hall (Jon) of Franklin, KY, and Sandy Jones (Kiffen) of Bowling Green, KY; 4 grandchildren, Will Lambert (Erica) of Franklin, KY, Emily Satterly (Josh) of Franklin, KY, Whitney Hall of Bowling Green, KY, and Leslie Cherry (Tyler) of Bowling Green, KY; and 7 great grandchildren, Hayden Satterly, Neely Lambert, Ansley Hoagland, Sam Satterly, Ryder Lambert, Hope Cherry, and Lane Cherry. He also survived by brother, Ernest Birdwell of Clay, KY and several nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Dixon High School in Webster County, KY; graduated in 1951 from Western Kentucky University where he also received his Masters Degree. He did graduate work at Peabody College in Nashville as well. He served four years in the US Air Force, one of those years in Korea. After returning to the USA, he taught and coached in Lewisburg, KY and Dixon, KY. He was principal in Slaughters, KY. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Scottsville, KY; Simpson County, KY; and Bourbon County, KY. When he became a superintendent for the first time, he was the youngest superintendent in the state. When he retired from Bourbon County Schools, he was the longest serving superintendent at that time with 38 years of service. After retiring from Superintendent of Schools in Bourbon County, he worked for the KY Department of Education for ten years serving as a consultant and retired there in 2000.

He received many honors and accolades one of the most significant was to be chosen,
KY School Superintendent of the Year in 1984 by The Kentucky Association of School Superintendents. His greatest professional honor was when Bourbon County Schools named the “William R. Birdwell Administration Building” in his honor. He was a Rotarian for 52 years, Kentucky Colonel, and was a member of Paris First United Methodist Church.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 25, at 2:00 pm at Paris First United Methodist Church in Paris, KY. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to American Heart Association or Paris First United Methodist Church.
