Obituary for James Edward Prater

James Edward  Prater
James Edward Prater, 84, attorney-at-law, widower of Elizabeth Clay Kirby “Libby” Prater, died October 31, 2017 at Bourbon Community Hospital. He was born January 30, 1933 in Hindman, Kentucky, son of the late David Pharaoh and Hattie Combs Prater. Jim was a graduate of Hindman Settlement School, Pikeville Junior College, and received his law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law. He was a member of Paris First United Methodist Church, Paris Kiwanis Club, Paris Rotary Club, Stoner Creek Country Club, and the Kentucky Bar Association. Jim is survived by a son, Dr. Philip E. (Mary Alice) Prater, Hillsboro; a daughter, Leslie Ann (Neil) Jackson Paris; four grandchildren, James Ross Prater, Lexington, Matthew Edward (Brooke) Prater, Greely, Colorado, Jonathan Daniel Prater, Hillsboro, Marcus Jeffery Jackson, Paris; a sister, Mildred (Raymond) Risner, Hindman; and two brothers, Walter Prater, Hazard, and Paul Prater, West Liberty. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home by Dr. Morgan Gilkey with burial in Paris Cemetery. Casket bearers will be James Ross Prater, Matthew Edward Prater, Jonathan Daniel Prater, Marcus Jeffery Jackson, Hume Wornall, and Bruce Wornall. Honorary bearers will be Steve Wornall, Chuck Redwine, Jim Johnson, Randy Thwaites, Tom Skeen, Ron Burden, Stan Galbraith, Jim Lovell, and his Bourbon Barrel lunch buddies. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to Paris First United Methodist Church or Paris Rotary Club.
