Gregory John Patterson, 62, passed peacefully into his Heavenly Father’s arms surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 4, 2016, after a three-year battle with cancer. He was born to the late George and Lorraine Patterson on August 2, 1954. Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, Greg resided on the family farm in Paris, Kentucky. Greg was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, and after a career in accounting, dedicated his life to serving in hospices to ensure God’s children a death of dignity. He is survived by his wife, Leigh Patterson; his daughter Paige and her husband Mark Davis; his son John and his wife Jenny; his stepson Chad and his partner Christina; his daughter Jena and her husband Wesley Scott; his remaining daughters, Maggie, Lizzie, Christen, Kate; his grandchildren, Cayleigh, Lillian, Matthew and Peyton; and his six siblings, George, Tim, Monica, Mary, Jennie, and Judy. An active member of the Church of the Annunciation in Paris, Greg was devoted to his Roman Catholic faith, his church, and his parish family. Greg was the founder of the Lexington chapter of the Roman Catholic business group, Legatus; a Knight of Columbus; and a volunteer for and friend of the Missionaries of Charity. He was an avid lover of the outdoors and passed along a great love of God’s earth and creatures to all his children. He also gifted his children with a love of writing and literature, including that of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. And as Lewis so eloquently concluded in The Last Battle, “But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and their adventures… had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”
Visitation will be at the Church of the Annunciation in Paris, Kentucky, on Friday, December 9 from 4-7:30pm, concluding with the praying of the Holy Rosary and the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for overnight Adoration. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10 at the Church of the Annunciation. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Paris. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Church of the Annunciation.
