Mrs. Margaret “Brownie” Haynes Brown Herbert died at her Lexington home on Tuesday, September 06th, 2016. “Brownie” was 96.
A native of Lexington, she was born Easter Sunday, April 04th, 1920 to the late John Young and Mayme Lee (Sudduth) Brown, Sr. Mrs. Herbert was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of sixty-two years, Mr. Robert Henry Herbert.
While a school-girl at the University School, “Brownie” became their first female cheerleader. She completed her career at the University High School where she graduated in 1938.
A 1942 graduate from the University of Kentucky, she held a BA in Education with a double major in Physical Education and Biology Science. While an undergraduate, Mrs. Herbert is credited with being the first woman to ever “Letter” at UK. She was a member of the UK Rifle Team, the first woman member of the UK Fencing (Team) Club, a charter member of the original Modern Dance Club, a member of Tau Sigma, and the Chi Omega Sorority.
Mrs. Herbert taught Physical Education at Bryan Station High School in 1942 and 1943 where she again distinguished herself as a “first” as a woman Coach for the Boys Basketball Team. “Brownie” directed the YWCA’s “Camp Otonka” in 1943 and again from 1962 through 1977. She was the Executive Secretary for the YWCA GIRL RESERVE, served as Advisor to the Kentucky 4-H Camp Planning Board, Director of the YWCA, Lexington, and Member of the American Camping Association where she served as Treasurer.
At her death, Mrs. Herbert was a sinecure member of the Jemima Johnson Chapter of the DAR and the North Middletown Christian Church.
She resided in Ft. Myers, Florida; Lexington; and her home at Tuckaway Farm, Paris.
Mrs. Herbert is survived by her children, Margaret “Peggy” Lee (John) Hendrickson, Patricia “Moki” Ann Hill, Gayle “Missy” Corrington (Bill) Ready, Catherine “Cissie” Frances (Bill) Moore; her Godson, Kim Monroe (Nola) Jackson; her Grandchildren, Joe Kelly Trout, Jr., Catherine Haynes Trout (Patrick) Mitchell, Charles Herbert Trout, Anne Preston Hill, Nathan Tate Moore; and Great Grandchildren, Aidan Alexander Moore and Georgia Wren Mitchell.
Visitation will be Friday, September 09th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home in Paris. A graveside service is to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Lexington Cemetery.
