Sallie Talbott Wasson Coons, 57, recently of Katy, Texas, a longtime resident of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Paris, wife of Gregory Dee Coons, died Friday, May 27, 2016 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She was born November 9, 1958 in Paris, daughter of Rebecca Myers Wasson, Paris, and the late Roger Deland Wasson. Sallie was a 1977 graduate of Paris High School, a graduate of Lexington Technical College, and was a member of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church in Katy, Texas and longtime member of Saint Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She was a Navy submarine wife for eight years, including a member of Ward Room Wives Club for the USS Hyman G. Rickover, SSN-709 where she had met and worked with Mrs. Rickover, the sponsor of the wives club. In the words of Mrs. Rickover at the commissioning of the USS Hyman G. Rickover, “They also serve who stand and wait” and Sallie did serve during her husband’s time at sea. The next 30 years, Sallie spent raising her family in Allentown, Pennsylvania, but included family overseas assignments for five years in Asia, living in Mumbai, India and Shanghai, China. She toured and loved many parts of Asia. In addition to her husband and mother, Sallie is survived by two daughters, Lauren (Henry) Holt, Lexington, Siena Catherine Coons, Katy, Texas; two sons, Scott David Coons, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Byron Joseph Coons, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Clara Constance Holt; brother, Roger D. (Kimberly) Wasson II, West Jefferson, Ohio; a sister, Gail (Bill) Blackburn, Pikeville; and her mother-in-law, Patsy Harney Coons. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 3, at the Catholic Church of the Annunciation, Paris, Kentucky, by Rev. Daniel Fister with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Tom Creasey, Phil Prater, Stephen Graves, Bob Perry, Tom Smith, and Jeff Kaiser. Honorary bearers will be Vince Stammetti and Rick Showalter. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home with Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
